Setting up Nikon cameras
Step-by-step guide to configure FTP on Nikon cameras.
This guide covers FTP setup for Nikon cameras with built-in WiFi and FTP capabilities.
Compatible Nikon cameras
Nikon cameras with built-in FTP support include:
- Nikon Z9, Z8, Z7 II, Z6 III, Z5
- Nikon D6, D5, D850
- Nikon D780, D500
Note: Some older models may require the WT-7 wireless transmitter.
Setup instructions
Step 1: Access network menu
- Press the Menu button
- Navigate to the Setup Menu (wrench icon)
- Select Connect to network or Network
- Choose Network settings
Step 2: Create a connection profile
- Select Create profile
- Choose FTP server
- Select Search for Wi-Fi network
- Choose your WiFi network and enter the password
Step 3: Configure FTP settings
When prompted, enter the server details:

Step 4: Save and connect
- Review your settings
- Save the profile with a memorable name
- The camera will attempt to connect
Step 5: Enable automatic upload
- Go to Network → Options
- Enable Auto send or Auto upload
- Choose whether to send during shooting or review
Connection indicator
A network icon appears in the viewfinder/LCD when connected:
- Solid icon: Connected and idle
- Blinking icon: Transferring files
- No icon: Not connected
Troubleshooting
Cannot find network: Make sure your router is broadcasting the SSID.
Connection timeout: Move closer to your WiFi router.
Upload fails mid-transfer: Check your WiFi stability and try a 5GHz network if available.
